ISLAMABAD- The Senate Standing Committee on Sports has directed Federal Minister for Sports Najamuddin Khan to consult the Ministry of Law for legislation through parliament to bring all the sports organisations including Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) under the umbrella of sports ministry. The committee met on Monday here at Parliament House under the chair of Senator Choudhary Zafar Iqbal and also expressed deep concern over the declining standard of games in the country and suggested that all the national sporting federations should be answerable to ministry of sports. It is pertinent to mention that both the Olympic bodies and cricket boards the world over are independent bodies. Senator, Zafar Iqbal also constituted a three-member sub committee consisting of Senator Tariq Azeem, Senator Muhammad Enver Baig and Senator Rozina Alam Khan to analyse the basic problems of the sports organisations and point out the reasons declinne of the performance in the international competitions. The sub-committee has been directed to submit its report back to house before August 30, 2008. Choudhary Zafar Iqbal told the members of the committee that he would request the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in writing to hold a session of standing committee and meet with the high ups of top national sports federations to solve their problems especially regarding the lack of finances and occupation of their land by the powerful circles. Earlier, Federal Minister for sports Najamuddin Khan informed the members of the committee that the funds being released for promotion of sports were not adequate and all the national federations were being monopolized by certain circles. The Minister said that the resourceful persons in cities like Lahore and Karachi illegally occupied the land of sports board. "We cannot construct the boxing gymnasium at Ferozpur Road Lahore and MA Jinnah road Karachi. These projects have been started on the special directives of president around four years back," he said. The minister also protested on the attitude of the national sports federations and said that influential groups had occupied these federations and they do not response to any queries by sports ministry. Senator Enver Baig, while supporting the minister's voice, said that Chief of Air Staff was heading Pakistan Squash Federation and so was the case with many federations and they never bother to answer the queries raised by the ministry.Senator Tariq Azim said that many officials of federations had been occupying their positions for decades and were not willing to vacate them. He and Enver Baig also demanded the inclusion of members of Senate and National Assemblies' Standing Committees in national federations and sports bodies in order to keep an eye on their performance.
