The worlds not fair

Reports in print and electronic media say that India and Canada have signed a landmark nuclear deal in Toronto, Canadians being the eighth nation out of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to sign a supply of technology agreement with India. NSG is the cartel that trades in fuel, equipment and technology for nuclear development. It had lifted a 34 years old ban on India in 2008. The Indo-Canada civil nuclear deal was in the air for some days now. As expected, there has been no strong reaction from the US or other western countries on it even though they are all given to talking pretty loud against Pakistan on any moves for acquiring nuclear technology for boosting its power generation capacity. Only recently, Pakistans 'NATO ally and friend USA had bluntly declined to enter into a civil nuclear technology deal with Islamabad even though it had no problems signing an exactly similar proposition with New Delhi some months back. India, for its part, keeps harping on 'Pakistans poor track record a pointed reference to a Pakistani nuclear scientists involvement in smuggling of nuclear technology that New Delhi would not let the world forget easily. USA, France, Britain and some other countries in the NSG are somehow not reconciled with the reality of Pakistan being a nuclear power. They have been told time and again, assured categorically, emphatically and very clearly by all in power in Islamabad that Pakistans nuclear assets are in safe hands now that a fool proof command and control system has been established. The smuggling network of the disgraced nuclear scientist has also been broken to bits and some years ago too. But the US and its partners in the NSG are simply never satisfied. They keep demanding assurances, clarifications and commitments from Islamabad but choose to look the other way when India enters into a new deal for acquiring newer nuclear technologies every other Saturday. Now that Pakistan has entered into a civil nuclear technology deal with China at last, gripes are being heard in all important capitals of the world? -BILAL MUSHTAQ SHAIKH, Lahore, June 29.
