As reported in The Nation on June 29, Vice Admiral William McRaven, nominated by President Barack Obama to take over Special forces command, and who oversaw Abottabad operation that killed Osama bin Laden, and Lt-Gen. Jon Allen who is to take over as ISAF commander, have told Senate Armed Services Committee that senior Pakistan army officers as well as ISI people know Mullah Omar is in Pakistan but are refusing to find him. They also said that bombs used against ISAF forces in Afghanistan are made in factories located in our tribal areas which our authorities did not destroy despite being told of their location in addition to accusing Pakistani authorities of protecting Haqqani group and that this attitude is unlikely to change. Earlier, President Barack Obama, Adm. Mike Mullen, Gen. David Petraeus, Leon Panetta and other US officials and lawmakers did their share of bad mouthing about Pakistan. As if not to be left behind, US ambassador in Afghanistan and US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Jewish-looking Marc Grossman, a Jewish-sounding name, also did their share of the national duty by hurling accusations at Pakistan. As for the billions of dollars given / to be given to Pakistan, the fact is that the reconstruction opportunity zones project is almost forgotten, and out of the supposedly billions of dollars under Kerry-Lugar, the amount that has so far reached Pakistan is only in millions. Even the coalition support fund, which is basically a reimbursement of the amount already spent by Pakistan, has fallen into arrear to the tune of $3.5 billion, out of which the amount of $ 1.8 billion has already been cleared by the US for payment, but is being held back, despite Pakistans difficult financial situation. All these happenings give a clear signal that the US is no friend of ours and actually the reverse is true. Having devastated Iraq, the US is now in its final phase of defanging and dismembering nuclear Pakistan, and encouraged by the Abbottabad operation, Barack Obama has already declared that the focus is now on Pakistan, exactly as predicted long time back by Lt-Gen (retd) Hameed Gul who said that 9/11 is the excuse, Afghanistan the foothold and launching pad, and Pakistan the real target. To satisfy the public opinion back home, Barack Obama has already announced troop withdrawals from Afghanistan. The assault on Pakistan would be through covert action and Robert Gatess irregular wars, the trailer of which we have seen already. It is really surprising that despite all this, our civilian leaders still treat the Americans as the best of friends and benefactors, rather as our near relatives. It is just as well that our armed forces and intelligence agencies see the situation exactly as it is and are giving the Americans a befitting treatment. S.R.H. HASHMI, Karachi, June 30.
