Terrorising Pakistan

The statement made by Home Land Security Head Michael Chertoff that Pakistan might see assassinations like Benazir Bhutto and string of bombing of civilian and official sites only depicts that how much United States is concerned with safety of Pakistan's future. In other words, Michael Chertoff has shown discontent with the on-going dialogue with fighters within the Pakistani borders. He thinks that the only way to negotiate with these individuals is by the use of force and if any political party gets involved and negotiates the peace process is going to be nullified by targeting the main stream politician. His statement should be seen as a threat not only to the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League (N) but also to the other leaders who are vocal against the US policy in Pakistan. The statement is a direct attack on the sovereignty of Pakistan and on the people who are trying to take an independent view on the issue of War On Terror. United States as a hegemon is trying its level best to undermine the restoration of judges by putting pressure on different political groups to deliver a policy that is inline with the US stakes in the region. They do not want an independent judiciary nor do they want a strong political party basis so that Pakistan's future may stay in the hands of a few to advance there agenda in the region. But the time has changed now, its no longer the 60's, 70's or 80's where the US had unfettered support of the western countries against the war on communism or it is no longer the aftermath of 9/11. Media as a forth pillar of the state has instilled the political know how at the lowest level of economic paradigm. The road ahead is quite bumpy for the US policy in Pakistan. The political leadership and masses understand their role if (God forbid) the US gets involved in the assassination of party leaders. Henceforth, the US government should avoid any direct involvement in the political process in order to try to muscle in the results they want. The tide is against the US and any power politics will only fetch negative results. Terrorism is as bigger the menace for Pakistan as it is for others and it should be dealt with keeping in mind the local dimensions. The pushing and shoving of US to have Pakistan deliver on her terms is no less than terrorism within itself. E-mail: shaziib@yahoo.com
