The usual way to Karachi airport is through Shahrah-e-Faisal. However, there is another access to airport from Pehalwan Goth, Gulistan-e-Johar, which is actually a shorter route. Thousands of motorists daily drive through this vital passage round the clock. Another artery, which is presently under casual surveillance, also passes alongside the aeroplane runway fence and sensitive CAA, ASF and PIA installations. It is used by a variety of vehicles like water tankers, oil tankers, loading trucks, school vans, motor bike riders and staff buses of ASF, PIA and Pakistan Steel Mill. A number of slow-movers like bicycles, loaded pushcarts etc also keep rolling on this road even in the dead of the night. In view of present security situation in the country I suggest the administration should make alterations in this road to enhance security. May I suggest that a double lane road from Pehalwan Goth to Shahrah-e-Faisal, may be constructed on both sides of the open floodwater drain that passes through this area. It would offer an alternate reliable route to airport and adjacent localities. The CAA owns the patch of land, therefore relocation of present structures, if they happen to be in the way of a new road, would not be problem. The project may be offered to private sector on build, operate and transfer basis. -S. BUKHARI, Karachi, via e-mail, May 29.
