Govt gives top priority to environment: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD - Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday said that the government gives top priority to the environment.

Addressing a ceremony attended by the diplomatic corps at the Foreign Office here, he said the US President Joe Biden has given the issue the importance it deserved.

The Foreign Minister called for international partnership to deal with the challenge of climate change. He pointed out that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help each other for the protection of environment. 

Foreign Minister Qureshi said Pakistan was ranked amongst the countries most vulnerable to climate change. He said Prime Minister Imran Khan was leading from the front and had taken the initiatives to provide a better and secured future to the coming generations.

The Foreign Minister said the world was now recognising the steps taken by Pakistan for the protection of environment. “The government is committed to make Pakistan a greener and cleaner country,” he added.

Foreign Minister leads cycle rally

Earlier in the day, the Foreign Office organised a cycle rally on the eve of International Environment Day. The rally was led by Foreign Minister Qureshi.

Special Assistant on Climate Change Amin Aslam, the parliamentary secretary for Climate Change, Head of the United Nations Development Program Knut Ostby and envoys of different countries participated in the rally titled ‘Pedal for a Green Pakistan.’

Pakistan is hosting the International Environment Day on the 5th of next month. Before the rally, the ambassadors of different countries commended the initiatives taken by Pakistan for protection of the environment.
