LAHORE - Column writing is a great skill that helps devise public opinion besides critically analysing the reports published on different issues. The columnist can be a more useful tool for change in society than other catalysts for bringing reforms in the society.
These were the views of speakers at Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan that organised a seminar on ‘Column Writing – Importance and Basic Imperatives” at HNPIP Auditorium near China Chowk on Wednesday.
Former law minister SM Zafar presided over while senior analysts Dr Ajmal Niazi and Qayyum Nizami were chief guests on occasion. Speakers include senior analysts and Asadullah Ghalib and Rauf Tahir were speakers on the occasion. HNPIP Director Absar Abdul Ali was the moderator.
SM Zafar said that he had a great love for The Nation Editor-in-Chief Dr Majid Nizami who fought for freedom of expression. He said he raised voice for democracy and stood up against the mighty dictators.  Qayyum Nizami said that columns were of great importance today. He said that the columnists also fought as a front line soldier in the Pakistan Movement. He said that the US forces left Vietnam when columnists wrote against the super power. He said that lawyers movement for the restoration of judiciary was also successfully supported by the column writers. He demanded to devise a code of conduct for journalists.  Asadullah Ghalib said that the true columnists had to bear hardships as he himself did during his career.
He said that the writer should be above any bias.  Adeeb Javedani said that the columnists should write for the public and their issues. He condemned those who got property from different sector for writing columns on their favour and defamed the sacred profession.  Rauf Tahir said that the columnists should have their fingers on the wrist of those who were deprived in the society.
They said that the writers should make themselves accountable.
