LAHORE- Vice-President Lahore Council for World Affairs (LCWA) and Former Ambassador Shaukat Umer has said that America, British, France
and China had been the first to become nuclear powers. If they had let this practice continue, there would have been 20 to 25 nuclear states up till now.
He was addressing a seminar organized by Punjab University Centre for South Asian Studies and Department of Political Science titled "Disarmament and non-proliferation Regimes: Successes and Failure" at CSAS seminar hall Today. Director CSAS & Chairperson Department of Political Science Prof Dr Umbreen Javaid, faculty members, M Phil/PhD scholars and students were present on the occasion.
In his address Shaukat Umer said these big powers negotiated and finalized a treaty and resultantly they got a success in containing the number of nuclear states. However, in spite of their efforts there had been some failure also. He said that Israel was unannounced nuclear power and Iran was also trying to become nuclear power.
