ISLAMABAD - Former Pakistan pacer Sarfraz Nawaz highly lauded batting of M Hafeez and captaincy of Misbahul Haq during the team’s first Test against Bangladesh.

In an interview with The Nation, Sarfraz said: “Hafeez shut Waqar's mouth with superb all-round performance with both willow and leather. It was Waqar who forcefully sent Hafeez back home from mega World Cup, which the all-rounder had clearly indicated in his statement. If Hafeez was utilized by arrogant head coach Waqar Younis, Pakistan team could have performed exceptionally well and the result could be far better.”

“Blunder one after another, as Waqar not only sent Hafeez back home but replaced out-of-form Nasir Jamshed with the all-rounder. Yasir Shah was badly misused as Waqar deliberately tried to ruin his career because he was only used against India in the World Cup,” he stated.

Sarfraz said Waqar continued experimenting with team. “Younis Khan was sent as opener, while player of the world cup Sarfraz Ahmed was highly misused and never given opportunities. Had Waqar given Sarfraz chance in the earlier matches and not stamped him as number 7 batsman, Pakistan team could have easily played with different frame of mind and picked right combination. Sarfraz proved Waqar a big loser earning two back-to-back man of the match awards in the world cup.”

Sarfraz stated: “Shaharyar Khan is a very old and weak chairman. Waqar suggested Azhar Ali as ODI captain, who had not been playing ODI cricket for the last two years and also didn’t have any captaincy experience. He also recommended the selectors to drop opener Ahmed Shahzad and Umar Akmal just because of personal grudges.”

The former pacer said Sarfraz Ahmed was once again not given much-needed backing and confidence by the arrogant head coach and was utilized at different batting orders. All the personal infightings during the world cup were badly exposed in front of the entire nation while poor team selection, poor batting order, coward captaincy, poor bowling and dropping Sarfraz Ahmed were the main reasons behind the team’s downfall during the mega event. In fact, Waqar and company are destroying Pakistan cricket.”

“After the shameful defeats at the hands of low-ranked Bangladesh team, Waqar should have resigned, as he is a big flop, even the PCB chief went on to accept that green caps lost very badly, and it was their worst ever performance. No one could even think about such pathetic results as it hurt the entire nation including me. Waqar doesn't deserve to be coach anymore and the more he stay with the team, the worse Pakistan team’s performance will be,” Sarfraz asserted.

“Even the parliamentarians including opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah took strong notice of such disgraceful defeats at the hands of Bangladesh team and demanded strict action against the PCB and also demanded to dissolve the board. PML-N MNA Mian Rohail Asghar openly criticized Najam Sethi and Shaharyar Khan and demanded to bring in technocrats for the revival of Pakistan cricket. Senate and National Assembly parliamentary committees’ recommendations were not followed in the past. Whenever the PCB chief or others were suggested by former greats and journalists, they never bothered to implement them. If they had followed such precious suggestions, the situation could have far better,” he added.

“I have received another notice from Najam Stehi’s lawyer, and I would soon conduct a press conference and reveal all the details of wrongdoings and hidden agenda being imposed on Pakistan cricket,” Sarfraz concluded.
