Rawalpindi - The government prescribed medicines stolen from Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital, Gujar Khan are being sold in the open market on exorbitant rates, reliable sources confided to The Nation here on Thursday. “A precious vaccine Rabipur (PCEC Rabies Vaccine B.P. for human use) that was stolen from THQ Hospital, Gujar Khan is being sold out against Rs800 by removing the stamp/monogram of the Punjab government at the medical stores and pharmacies located outside the government-run hospital,” sources added.
“The disclosure of the scam jolted the city district government and health department as District Coordination Officer (DCO) and acting Executive District Officer (EDO) Health carried out investigation into the matter,” sources said, adding the Medical Superintendent (MS) THQ had made a ward boy the scapegoat in the scandal in a bid to save his and other corrupt officials’ skin. Rapipur vaccines are provided free of cost in all the emergency departments of government-run hospitals to dog or other rodents’ bite patients by the Punjab Health Department.
According to sources, the sale of Rabies vaccines that were actually stolen from THQ Gujar Khan was continuing unabated at a medical store located near the hospital. A pack of Rabies vaccine was purchased by a customer against Rs800 who also got the receipt from the owner. “Later, the batch number of the vaccine was matched with the vaccines put in the pharmacy of hospital,” sources said.
MS THQ, after unearthing the scam, came into action and suspended a ward boy namely Fareed on account of stealing and selling the vaccine in open market. However, sources in hospital insisted that action against a poor ward boy would not be enough as other staffers were also involved in the medicines’ stealing and action should also be taken against them.
DCO Sajid Zafar Dall and acting EDO Health Dr Nasir did not attend phone calls made by this scribe to know their point of views over the scam. AC Gujar Khan when contacted told The Nation FIR has been registered against the accused. “Further probe would reveal the network,” she said.
