LAYYAH-The death toll from the consumption of poisonous sweets rose to 31 as another 17-year-old youth died in Jinnah Hospital Lahore on Saturday.

According to parents of deceased Mujahid Hussain was initially admitted to DHQ Hospital Layyah and then referred to Nishtar Hospital Multan from where he was referred to Jinnah Hospital Lahore due to his critical condition. Funeral prayer for Mujahid Hussain was offered in Chak 105/TD at 111 Mor, which was attended by a large number of people from all walks of life.

The police have failed to ascertain cause of the deaths and modus operandi that led to the loss of huge number of precious lives.

Reportedly, the forensic report has altered the initial findings of the administration that agriculture pesticide SallfoLial had mixed in the sweets. The forensic report which could not be handed to the police or the Health Department, indicates that agriculture spry Calrofyn was mixed in the sweets which caused the deaths.

The toxic sweets incident was occurred on April 19, when Umar Hayat, a resident of Chak-105/ML Fatehpur in Tehsil Kahror Lal Esan brought sweets from a local shop situated at Chowk-111 to celebrate the birth of his grandson, as the child had borne to his son 10 years of his marriage.

The sweets consumption affected more than 80 persons including women and children. Out of the total 80 affectees, 31 persons have died so far while 16 are in hospitals, of which six affectees are said to be critical. Nine siblings - eight brother and sister and their four grandsons are among the deaths.
