ISLAMABAD - National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza has convened a meeting of leaders of the parliamentary parties on November 3 to constitute a Special Committee to review foreign policy, provide guidelines and roadmap and monitor the implementation of 14-point resolution of the recent Parliament's in-camera joint sitting, a reliable source told TheNation on Friday. The in-camera parliamentary session had unanimously passed a 14-point resolution on October 22 in which it was stated "That a special committee of Parliament be constituted to periodically review, provide guidelines and monitor the implementation of the principles framed and roadmap given in this resolution". The sitting had authorized the Speaker to constitute the committee in consultation with the parliamentary leaders of the National Assembly and the Senate. The committee itself will frame its rules. During the 15-day joint sitting, legislators had demanded of the government to urgently review its anti-terror policy and the country's national security strategy. According to sources, the Speaker had summoned the meeting on November 3 at 10:30am at her chamber. In this regard, she had sent letters to the parliamentary leaders of both the Houses on Friday. Dr Fehmida Mirza, in the letter to the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, said, "I am availing this opportunity to congratulate you on the successful culmination of the Parliament's recent in-camera session. I believe that this session provided an ample opportunity to all the parliamentarians to contribute to a vital issue of national concern. It was, thus, a joint resolve of the Parliament to seek a comprehensive solution that paved the way for the passage of a consensus resolution at its conclusion." "In this respect, I commend your role as parliamentary leader and thank you for your support in the smooth conduct of the House during the session. As you are aware, the stated resolution also authorised the Speaker to constitute a Parliamentary Committee to regularly monitor the on-going policy in this regard. I invite you in my Chamber to discuss the modalities of the proposed Committee. My office will soon be contacting you with the exact date and time for the said meeting," the letter reads. The source said that the Speaker has issued letters to a total of 23 parliamentary leaders, including Asfandyar Wali Khan of ANP, Syed Khurshed Ahmed Shah, Chief Whip of PPP, Muhammad Farooq Sattar of MQM. Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao of PPP-Sharpao, Yaqoob Bizanjo of BNP-Awami, Ghulam Murtaza Khan Jatoi of BNP, Jehangir Khan Tareen of PML-F and Maulana Fazlur Rehman of JUI-F. According to sources, the letter issued to parliamentary party leaders of the Upper House include the Leader of the House in Senate Mian raza Rabbani of PPP, Leader of Opposition in Senate Kamal Ali Agha of PML-Q, Senator Haji Muhammad Adeel of ANP, Senator Abdur Rahim Khan Mandokhail of PKMAP, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar of PML-N, Prof Khurshid Ahmed of JI, Maulana Gull Naseeb Khan of JUI-F, Senator Babar Khan Ghauri of MQM, Shahid Bugti of JWP, Maulana Samiul Haq of JUI-S, Abdul Razak A Thahim of PML-F, Senator Mir Israrullah Khan of BNP-A and Senator Dr Abdul Malik (Independent).
