OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Newly election president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Muhammad Yasin Azad Monday called for making the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court based on merit. Addressing a press conference with former President of the Bar, Asma Jahangir, Azad said the method of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is okay but from Sindh High Court some junior judges have been elevated. Azad said every institution must perform within its constitutional limits otherwise the country would suffer. Asma said on the occasion that lawyers have reservations over the elevation of junior judges of the SHC to the SC. To a question, she said in bar election neither government nor judiciary can succeed and the success of Azad in the election in fact, is the success of the lawyers and no-one else. Details of foreigners in Punjab jails sought: The Lahore High Court Monday called for the details of foreigners imprisoned in the Punjab jails. On the petition filed by Advocate Owais Sheikh, the court passed this direction to the Punjab Home Secretary to file details of the foreigners imprisoned in jails by November 2. The petitioner had contended that in Kot Lakhpat Jail, two Indians were still imprisoned despite the fact they had served the period of their respective jail. The court had also called for a reply to the petition from Superintendent Kot Lakhpat Jail by the said date.
