KP minister escapes attempt on life in Kohat

PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Housing, Malik Amjad Afridi, escaped a life attempt on Monday, as some unidentified armed persons opened fire at his bulletproof vehicle in Billitang area of district Kohat. Sources said that minister was on his way in his vehicle when armed persons attacked him, adding owing to bulletproof vehicle, he survived. They said one of the bullets hit the windscreen of his vehicle. Malik Amjad Afridi was elected Member of Provincial Assembly from PK-37 in February 2008 general elections as an independent candidate. Later he joined Awami National Party and he was given the portfolio of ministry of housing. District Police Officer, Kohat, Mubarik Zeb said that militants fired three sniper shots at his vehicle, out of which one hit the car's windscreen slightly damaging it. He said the militants were hidden in the mountainous Bilitang area of Kohat. Talking to local journalists, Afridi said he had no enmity with anyone and the attackers might be those who had attacked his father two years back. He said that involvement of militants could not be ruled out in this incident. It is worth mentioning here that Haji Shamim Afridi, the father of Amjad, was injured in a life attempt while his gunman was killed when some armed persons attacked him in his hometown two years back. He had rushed to PIMS, Islamabad, where he was provided with medical treatment. Shamim was close associate of former slain governor Balochistan Nawab Akbar Bugti and was also an active member of his Jamhuri Watan Paty.
