ISLAMABAD (Online) - Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has approved suspension of additional outflow of water from water reservoirs due to water shortfall which will lead to scale down power production by 1500 megawatt. IRSA Advisory Committee met here on Friday under Chairman IRSA Rao Irshad which was attended by officials of Irrigation Department of all the four provinces, WAPDA and Ministry of Water and Power. Irrigation Department Sindh took the plea in the meeting that water shortfall was on rise in Karachi. Water should be supplied to Karachi from River Sindh ,otherwise, peace of the City could be put at stake due to shortage of water, it cautioned. Sources told Online that water distribution formula for Rabbi season was also reviewed at length in the meeting. It was also decided to address the problems facing Punjab and Sindh with regard to water shortfall. Talking to media persons after the meeting, Chairman IRSA Rao Irshad said approval was accorded for stoppage of additional outflow of water from Mangla and Tarbela Dams. This way outflow of water will be curtailed from 92,000 cusec water to 50,000 cusecs from Tarbela Dam and from 29,000 cusecs to 20,000 cusecs from Mangla Dam, he said. He further said that IRSA was supplying additional water for power generation, which had now been stopped. The water being wasted at Kotri barrage could have been stored if dams had been constructed, he added.
