You served us well

It has been reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (29-08-2010) that the government has decided not to give any further extensions to the incumbent Vice Chancellors of universities who have reached the age of 61 to 65 years or have been given repeated extensions during the Musharraf government. This is a good decision because now the serving senior professors would be able to aspire for the VC job before they are due to retire at the age of 60 years. A very pertinent case that I know of is that of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore where the present Vice Chancellor is still serving despite being 65 years of age. Without any prejudice to the incumbent, who has done an extraordinary job during his tenure, it would be in the fitness of things to select a senior professor with requisite qualifications for the VCs job now. Better still, we should give a chance to some senior professor from Animal Production field because the last two successive Vice Chancellors have come from the Veterinary Sciences. That would justify development of four faculties for Animal Production & Management at the university. Lets not forget that since its very inception, the UVAS was envisioned to be a University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. -DR M. YAQOOB BHAT-TI, Lahore, August 30.
