ISLAMABAD – Pakistan tennis ace Aisamul Haq Qureshi, with his clinical performances, shut the mouths of his critics who were describing him as veteran and already written him off. First, Aisam helped Pakistan winning the important Asia-Oceania Davis Cup tie against Sri Lanka, and that too by winning the do-or-die fifth and final singles match. Although he was never known for a singles specialist player and now he made history by winning the first ATP Master 1000 Sony Open doubles title in Miami partnering with Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer. The Pak-Dutch pair was fifth seeds in the event but both of them played superb tennis right from the very first match till the final. The win marks their third title together, the previous two won in Halle and Estoril in 2012. It is the second ATP Masters 1000 title for Aisam while first for Rojer. Aisam had also won Paris Master while pairing with Rohan Bhopanna of India. Aisam, 33, is without a shadow of doubt the greatest tennis player the country had ever produced. He kept the country’s flag high wherever he went to play. Now, he did the same in Miami where in front of a packed to capacity crowd, he dedicated his title to his beloved country. The gesture would remain in the hearts and minds of Pakistanis, who are very sports loving nation. Though he is not a cricketer but his down to earth attitude and humble nature, he is being loved not only in Pakistan but also the world over. Not many people are aware of the fact that Aisam started playing tennis at a later age compare to others, but full fledge support of his parents and his passion soon took him where every tennis player can only dream off. People had started writing him off after a slight downfall in his recent form, but they have forgotten a very simple fact that he was playing tennis with Indian partner Rohan Bopanna since long, and it is very hard to adjust with a new partner. But to his great credit, Aisam never lost his composure and let his racket do the wonders and now he is almost back to his usual best. Credit must be given to him as he always kept in mind Davis Cup dates and never let the country down whenever Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) calls him, he always responds to that calls in a positive manner and represent the country in all the Davis Cup ties. Aisam still has to play a crucial role as far as Pakistan tennis is concerned as the most important and crucial Davis Cup tie against New Zealand will start from April 5 and Pakistan’s further progress in Davis Cup rest heavily on Aisam and Aqeel’s shoulders. In fact, the pair of Aisam and Aqeel never lost a doubles match yet and always played out of their skins for the country. It is hoped that Pakistan team will deliver well and try their best to win the Davis Cup tie against New Zealand.
