Zenobia retains National Chess title

LAHORE – Zenobia of Karachi has retained her national title after winning the 4th National Women Chess Championship 2014. Zenobia stood first with 6.5 points while Urooj secured second slot with 6 points, Ghazala earned the third with 5.5 and Maryam and Nameeqa scored 5 points each and got fourth and fifth position respectively. The last day of the championship proved to be very lucky for Zenobia when she hardly escaped twice against well prepared young talent Maryam Nasir of Gujranwala and Urooj Saeed of Lahore. These top five players have earned the right to represent the country in the 41st World Chess Olympiads to be held at Tromso, Norway in August 2014. Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP) secretary Dr Naeem Hamid Mirza gave away trophies and certificates to the winners.–Staff Reporter

RISJA beat PSB in friendly fixture

ISLAMABAD – Rawalpindi Islamabad Sports Journalists Association (RISJA) thrashed Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) by eight wickets in a friendly match played at Jinnah Stadium on late Monday. PSB skipper DG Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera won the toss and opted to bat first as the PSB managed to post 78-7 in 10 overs. Rana Nasrullah top scored with 15 while Syed Habib Shah made 12 runs. RISJA captain Mohsin Ali grabbed 2-1 while Syed Sammer Abbas, Afzal Javed, Zulfiqar Baig and Shakir Abbasi got one wicket each. RISJA achieved the target in 9.1 overs losing two wickets. Afzal Javed made 26 while Jahanzaib Ali 13. Mohsin and Shakir Abbasi remained unbeaten on 12 each. Ganjera and Agha Amjed Ullah shared a wicket apiece. Aisam joins Davis Cup squad in Manila

ISLAMABAD - Aisamul Haq reached Manila on Tuesday afternoon to join other members of Pakistan Davis Cup squad for the crucial Asia Oceania Group-II tie against hosts Philippines starting from April 4 to  6. Pakistani team comprising Aisam, Aqeel, Yasir and Samir had an extensive training session at Manila Club. Talking to this scribe from Manila, Aqeel said with the arrival of Asiam there is a different mood in the team now and ever body is very excited. He said it always hurts when local people make laugh of us, as previously we were beaten quite comprehensively by the hosts, but now for the very first time after a long gap, things look completely different altogether and now we stand a realistic chance of upsetting hosts and take something positive from the tie.–Staff Reporter

National Basketball Championship starts

ISLAMABAD - Opening ceremony of 53rd National Basketball Championship held at POF Sports Complex in Wah Cantt Tuesday. President Basketball Federation (PBF) M Asif Bajwa was the chief guest of the opening ceremony. A total of 12 prominent teams of the country including Army, Railway, Navy, POF, Wapda, Higher Education Commission, Islamabad, KPK, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Pakistan Air Force are participating in the championship. The opening match was played between Railway and POF in which POF beat Railway by 57-39. POF dominated the entire match and never allowed Railways to settle down in the match while in the second match of the day, Sindh was too strong for minnows Balochistan. Sindh outplayed Balochistan 27-14. The championship would continue till 8th. Staff Reporter

Football Challenge Cup enters semis stage

LAHORE – The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Football Challenge Cup 2014 entered the semi-finals stage. On Tuesday, two quarterfinals were played. In the first quarterfinal, PAF defeated KRL 4-2 on penalty kicks while in the second, HBL beat PIA 1-0. The first match of the day saw a thrilling contest between PAF and KRL which ended in a draw. The match was then decided on penalty kicks. PAF players scored four goals on four penalties while KRL players missed two and lost the match. In another encounter of the day, HBL scored easy 1-0 win over PIA. Today (Wednesday) is a rest day while the first semi-final between KPT and PAF will be played at 3:30pm at KPT Football Stadium while the second semi-final will be played between HBL and KESC at 3:30pm at KMC Football Stadium.–Staff Reporter
