LAHORE (INP) - Brick kiln owners went on strike on Monday to protest against the imposition of 16 per cent Sales Tax on bricks, bringing construction activities to a complete halt. The call for the strike was given by President of Brick Kiln Owners Association Shaoib Khan Niazi. He also threatened that if the government did not withdraw the sales tax they along with workers would launch a march towards Islamabad and stage a sit-in (Dharna) in front of the Parliament House. According to reports reaching from different parts of the country including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Tarnol, Fateh Jang, Layyah, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan and other cities of Punjab, all activities at the brick kilns including preparation of bricks have been stopped. The Association has threatened that until the sales tax was withdrawn their strike would continue and all construction activities would also come to a halt. It said that in chain reaction, labourers working at different projects and involved in construction of houses would also be made jobless as work would stop due to non availability of bricks.
