KARACHI - Riots and violence which claimed over scores of lives and injured more than 200 persons, dislocations of communities from troubled areas and losses of worth millions of rupees during the ethnic violence has exposed the negligence and failure of the law enforcement agencies to maintain peace in the City. It has been reported that Inspector General of Sindh Police, Salahuddin Baber Khattak, called police officers couple of days ago and directed them to arrest those who helped in escalating ethnic violence without any discrimination. The failure of law enforcement agencies during the three consecutive days of violence in the City has exposed that strict orders of Sindh government are not being implemented with full authority. Neither the police nor Rangers had succeeded to control the law and order situation. The sources in the Sindh police said that Sindh government had issued strict directives of shoot-at-sight for the miscreants but the police authorities had yet not get any written orders in this regard. Khattak when contacted told TheNation that whosoever belonged to any party if found involved in spreading violence than they would be booked. So far more than 100 miscreants have been arrested from various troubled areas, he said. He said that the Sindh police had prepared the contingency plan to control the law and order situation in the effected areas which include Orangi Town, Banaras Colony, Qasba, Sohrab Goth and some other areas. The IGP Sindh said that SHOs of all the police stations across the City have been alerted while 14 SHOs have been transferred keeping in view the overall situation of the City. It is also learnt that a high level police meeting was held at Central Police Office (CPO) on Monday which was presided by the provincial Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza and participated by IGP Sindh Salahuddin Baber Khattak, CCPO Karachi Waseem Ahmed and other high police officials. The sources in the police said that after the meeting written orders of shoot at sight were yet not received. Meanwhile, citizens expressed annoyance over the deteriorating law and order situation in parts of defunct district West. They said that MQM, PPP and ANP continuously issued statements of establishing peace and harmony, but why the City was still burning for the last three days. They said that horrible news were spreading at every nook and corner that terrorists chopping ears of passers-by on linguistic basis, besides putting glue in the eyes and ears of the innocent people who were passing from the effected areas. The miscreants had also burnt their motorcycles and cars. Citizens have demanded that this is not the time of issuing and making announcements if Sindh government and its allied parties are sincere in establishing peace and harmony in the City and maintain the law and order situation.
