LAHORE The ruling PPP leadership seems outraged at the Supreme Courts Thursday order on a petition filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Senator Babar Awan, who is among the confidants of President Zardari, federal ministers Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan and Syed Khursheed Shah, and PPP Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira held a news conference in Islamabad to express their views on the subject. The former law minister, who has made millions by representing the government in various cases, targeted both the apex court and the PML-N leadership. He said the court had passed the order without hearing the federations point of view. That Mr Sharif was given protocol at the Constitution Avenue, his security guards were allowed to enter the courtrooms along with their weapons, the failure of the former prime minister to have a case registered against Gen Musharraf, who had toppled his government, were some of the main points of the news conference. The PPP leaders also expressed reservations about the appointment of an official, whose brother is holding an important position in the Punjab government, to investigate the memorandum issue. Dr Babar Awan also pointed out the presence of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, who is the cousin of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The Lyallpuri cousin (of the CJP) who had issued a death decree against me was also present, he said, satire visible on his face. The constitutionality and legality of the order passed by the Supreme Court is known only to the bench or the legal fraternity. However, the PPP leaders should not have said before the media which they said. Dr Awan should have said everything in the court. His news conference appears to be an attempt to politicize the whole issue. If the Supreme Court had not followed the rules of the game, as alleged, the PPP leaders should have filed a review against the order. They could have sought suspension of the order, or exercised other options which could serve their purpose. It is a very serious case which may lead to serious consequences. The government lawyers should contest it seriously and professionally. The politicization of the issue or stoking of provincial prejudices would not help anyone. The PPP leaders should not forget that the late Yahya Bakhtiar had not contested the murder case against the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as strongly as he could and should have. He had tried to politicise it. As a result, the former prime minister was awarded capital punishment and then taken to gallows. The country was deprived of a capable leader. Whether it was a judicial murder or not would be decided in due course. Everyone knows how Mr Husain Haqqani has been able to become ambassador to the US. He can go to any extent to move the higher rungs of the ladder. He worked with the PML-N and launched a smear campaign against the PPP leadership. He also worked with Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi and Mir Balakh Sher Mazari. Then he joined hands with the PPP leadership and enjoyed various positions. Ultimately he became Pakistans ambassador to the US. Before being assigned there, he also tried to become National Security adviser. If the PML-N president has moved the Supreme Court, he must have reason to do so. Court issues cant be settled in media
