LAHORE Two general managers of Pakistan International Airlines IT department have caused the national flag carrier a loss of more than 48 million rupees by making illegal appointments in the corporation, revealed an inquiry report available with TheNation. Surprisingly, the Airlines management instead of taking strong action against the responsible issued just a displeasure notice to the accused warning them to avoid any such illegality in future. The story was exposed after a formal departmental inquiry held against two general managers, Aasd Afridi, GM Communications (P-46103) and M Zubair Bhatti, GM System Support & Network (P-45421) of the IT department of PIA. The gentlemen were proven guilty in the inquiry report for irregular appointment and promotion of officers in IT department. After being declared at fault and held responsible for causing huge financial loss of RS 48.84 million to the corporation they were served with a letter of displeasure from the Director HR A&C, Captain Saleem Ahmed. Senior PIF officers seeking anonymity have criticised the current PIA management for failing to take a stringent action against officers involved and said there were so many other examples where no action had been taken by the authorities. In another inquiry conducted by a competent authority, Johnson Eric, a physiotherapist (P-48047) was declared guilty of producing fake Matriculation certificate at the time of appointment in PIA. According to PIA company policy, the punishment for this type of misconduct is dismissal from service but he is still working at his existing position. The dreadful story does not end here. Remaining indecisive intentionally, for the 'Leeches in Engineering Department, is another 'feather in the cap for the management. An inquiry against the corruption in Engine Overhaul Division of PIA Engineering was held by the order of managing director. The inquiry committee comprised Chief Engineer (Quality Assurance) Aslam Tariq and DGM Corporate Planning Asim Sheikh and headed by Director (Procurement & Logistics) Khalid Iftikhar. The poor members of the committee conducted and concluded the inquiry with no results. The inquiry members were so unfortunate that they were displaced from their positions and the inquiry remained undecided. Deputy Chief Engineer (Engine Overhaul) Sohail Saqib and allies allegedly forced the inquiry committee to keep quiet and displaced. Sohail Saqib was blamed for giving undue favour to his foreign aides by helping them out with PIA inventory spare-parts for the overhauling process of their engines. Further, he also allegedly deceived the customers. One of the examples is Hellenic Imperial Airways CF6-50 engine with serial number 517-987, a main contention for the inquiry. The other customer FDI (Flight Director Inc) was dealt in such a way that they refused to come again to PIA and even to Pakistan. The Airline is fast heading towards a tragic fall like the other national assets of the country - Pakistan Railways and Pakistan Steel. The corporation, already on its knees, is being weakened by the termites from within, said an officer of PIA on condition of not to be named. The rising fuel prices and countrys overall economic situation maybe one of the contributing factors, but the meltdown faced by the internal corruption cannot be ruled out too, he lamented. When contacted, spokesman of PIA said both the directors, Asad Afridi and Zubair Bhatti were not guilty of hiring any manpower since they were not authorised to do so. He said director HR was the only authority to hire someone in the airline and Chairman PIA had issued strict directions to observe merit policy in recent hiring of air hostesses. Talking about the presentation of fake Matric certificate by a physiotherapist of PIA for employment, he said he was sacked after the allegation proved true against him. Contrary to the claim of PIA spokesman, sources said he was still serving the Airlines.
