LAHORE - A provincial legislator was deprived of cash and mobile phones in a daylight robbery on The Mall yesterday.

Two motorcyclists held up Punjab Assembly member Inamullah Niazi at gunpoint on the high security zone and fled, police said. He was robbed of Rs15,000 cash and two mobile phones when he stopped his car at a traffic signal in the Civil Lines police precincts.

Niazi was coming back after attending the assembly session – the time when dozens of police response units were on patrol. Top bureaucratese, ministers, and senior judges frequently travel on the Mall road with security squads.

Lahore DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf took notice and sought report from the SP concerned. He directed police to ensure immediate arrest of the criminals. Following the robbery, copes intensified patrolling on The Mall. A case was registered with the Civil Lines police but no arrest was made so far.

Also, three armed bandits forced their entry into the house of Tariq in Raza Block in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and looted cash, gold and other valuables  from a  family. The police were investigating.

Robberies were also reported in Baghbanpura, Johar Town, Shadbagh, Islampura, Chuhng, Mustafa Town, Green Town, Ghaziabad, and North Cantonment.
