ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and Sri Lanka scored 1-1 on the first day of their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group-II tie played in Colombo on Friday.

Pakistan's ace tennis player Aqeel Khan gave Pakistan upper hand in the first match of the day when he beat Sri Lankan No 2 Dineshkanthan Thangrajah 3-1 in a tight two hour and 45 minutes match. But Sri Lankan No 1 Harshana Godamanna then beat Pakistan's tennis ace Aisam Qureshi in a very tight match 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-6(3) in three hours of highly-entertaining tennis.

Talking exclusively to this scribe from Sri Lanaka, Aqeel said: “I started the match in a very positive fashion but Dineshkanthan took the first set 6-4. This was like an eye-opener for me as I bounced back to and completely dominated the second set and won it 6-1. I was leading 4-2 in the third set when Dineshkanthan started to feel cramps and he conceded the match.”

Aqeel said the second match of the day was played between Aisam and Harshana Godamanna.

It was a see saw battle between the two top players, but Godamanna managed to beat Aisam after a very tight match 7-6(3) 7-5 and 7-6(3) in three hours.

“We still have a very bright chance of inflicting defeat on our opponents as all are fully aware of the fact that Asiam is a specialists doubles player and we have played together since long. We will bounce back and win the important doubles match against Godamanna/Rajeev Rajapakse. We know if we manage to win the doubles match, we will have a very good chance of winning the tie,” Aqeel concluded.
