QUETTA - A shutter-down and wheel-jam strike on Friday against imposition of the governor’s rule paralysed life in Quetta and other towns of Balochistan.Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) and Balochistan National Party (Awami) had given strike call to protest against imposition of the governor’s rule and dismissal of their government. JUI-F, BNP-Awami and some members of PPP, terming the governor’s rule disrespect of the mandate of the people also held rallies on January 20 a shutter-down strike on January 25.In Quetta, all business centers, markets and shops on Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Iqbal, Liauqat Bazaar, Prince Road, Double Road, Sariab Road and other areas remained closed. The roads presented a deserted look due to the wheel-jam strike.The workers of JUI-F and BNP-A early in the morning erected barricades and burnt tyres, forcing shopkeepers to pull their shutters down. Some furious protesters pelted stones on vehicles due to which windscreens of two buses, two cars and five rickshaws on Sariab Road were broken while unidentified people also set a motorbike on fire.The police backed by Frontier Corps, Balochistan Constabulary and Anti-Terrorism Force were deployed in the city to avert any untoward incident while law-enforcement agencies in vehicles kept patrolling the city. The police rounded up more than one dozen people from Sariab Road and its surrounding areas for harassing shopkeepers and pelting stones on commuters. The party workers also blocked the highways leading to various other parts of the province and the country by creating certain barricades which suspended incoming and outgoing traffic in the provincial capital.Anjuman-i-Tajiran and several transporters’ associations did not take part in the strike. Dozens of workers of JUI-F and BNP-Awami took out a rally in Quetta city, which marched on various roads, chanting slogans against the governor’s rule and in favour of restoration of the Raisani government. Shutter-down and wheel-jam strike was also observed in Qilla Saifullah, Qilla Abdullah, Chaman, Noshki, Dalbandin, Musakhel, Pishin, Turbat, Sibi, Muslim Bagh and Loralai. The JUI-F workers also blocked the Quetta-Chaman Highway at Kojak by placing barricades.APP adds: The police also arrested 20 political activists for allegedly forcing shopkeepers to close their shops in different areas of the metropolis. Police said political activists of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) were forcing shopkeepers to close their shops as JUI-F and Balochistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A) have given call for shutter down and wheel-jam strike against imposition of Governor’s rule in the province.The arrested political workers have been kept in different police stations.
