RAWALPINDI - At a time when Pakistani society is facing dangers of narcotics, some black sheep in Rawalpindi police are engaged in making money by sparing drug dealers and suppliers despite catching them red-handed.A police officer posted at Police Station Cannt took Rs 38,000 bribe from a notorious drug supplier and set him along with five others free, who were caught red-handed while carrying 500 grams of Charas in a car by a police team during routine checking outside in Saddar area on January 28, 2014, reliable sources revealed to The Nation on Saturday. The most interesting thing was that the 'very generous' police officer returned the seized narcotics to the drug supplier, the sources added. The police-drug rackets cahoots not only exposed the poor performance of Potohar Division police high-ups but also shattered the dream of CM Punjab of making police department corruption free.Taking notice of this huge blunder, SSP (Operations) Mian Maqbool held inquiry against the accused SI, besides sending him show cause notice.According to sources, a police team, led by Sub Inspector (SI) Rizwan Shah, was on patrol at Adamjee Road on January 28 (Tuesday) when they spotted a 98 model silver Honda Civic with six persons on board at 9:00pm and signalled him to stop. During course of checking, police found 500 grams of Charas from a man namely Shakeel and apprehended all the persons besides impounding car in the police station. In the meanwhile, the sympathisers of the drug supplier rushed to the police station and broke a deal with SI Rizwan Shah, the sources said adding that in the beginning SI demanded Rs 200,000 as bribe to free all the arrested persons. However, after negotiations Rizwan Shah agreed on Rs 38,000. The amount was received by a police cop Javed Iqbal, who was in civvies, the sources asserted. Later, all the arrested persons were released by SI besides returning them the seized narcotics, sources added. Of six nabbed persons, five belonged to Peshawar and told to be university students.Sources said that Shakeel, the residents of Rawalpindi, is a notorious drug supplier who used to smuggle Charas from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and supplies it in various areas of the city.SI Rizwan Shah and Constable Javed Iqbal did not receive calls of this scribe despite repeated attempts. SSP (Operations) Mian Maqbool, however, when contacted by this scribe and told the whole saga, expressed his serious concerns over the blunder committed by the SI. He said that he ordered immediate departmental inquiry against SI Rizwan besides sending him show cause notice. He said that the act of the police officer has bent the head of police department with shame and vowed to take a strict action against him for favouring the drug peddler. "I will not spare him at any cost and will dismiss him from service if charges levelled against him proved true," Maqbool said.
