On December 24, 2009, Yousaf Reza Gilani, our Prime Minister, said there was no difference between the PPP and Army. He said relations between the PPP and GHQ had struck a cordial note for the first time in history. Three days later, the President in his public address, blamed 'the institutions' for conspiring against the government without naming anyone. I think it needs to be pointed out which 'institution' had irked the President so much? This point was also raised in a TV channel's talk show that took place immediately after the President's emotional public address. The anchor Hamid Mir, and his guests Lt. General (Rtd) Talat Masud and Haroon Rashid, all seemed to agree that the solution of the present crisis is that Army should clear its position. The solution of this syndicate was that the President, the Prime Minister and the COAS should be closeted into a room and negotiate for hours if the need be and come out only when they have agreed to announce complete cooperation within themselves. It was suggested that yet another voice to be included was that of Nawaz Sharif. If such a meeting does take place indeed, it would only result in putting up a false show with all of them smiling. A noted columnist in his latest article has also highlighted the difference between the President and the PM due to the later veering towards 'institutions'. The media, meanwhile, is clearly pointing the finger at the Army. This I think is yet another ploy to pressurize the Army leadership. -A. Q. ANJUM, Rawalpindi, December 29
