Black coats reject military courts

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Bar Association on Thursday rejected the formation of military courts.
The lawyers termed the military courts against the spirit of democratic system and the constitution. They said the military courts were negation of basic human rights and the legal fraternity would not tolerate it at all.
The bar’s general house unanimously passed resolution against formation of military courts upholding that constitution did not support establishment of such courts. The lawyers stated that military courts were not the solution to terrorism. They stressed upon strengthening of the justice system and capacity building of law enforcement and investigation agencies.
Bar’s vice president Amir Jalil Siddiqui conducted the meeting while secretary Mian Ahmad Chachar presented the resolution before the house. Former presidents of Supreme Court Bar Association Hamid Khan and Asma Jahangir, former president of Lahore Bar Association Zulfiqar Chaudhry, Barrister Zafarullah Khan and others spoke on the occasion.
Addressing the members of the bar association, the lawyers condemned Peshawar killings and demanded maximum punishment to the culprits involved in it.
The lawyers said that the judicial system should be made flawless rather than establishing military courts to punish terrorists. The bar also announced to call “All Pakistan Lawyers’ Representative Convention” to discuss the matter of military courts but did not give any date. A larger number of lawyers took part in the general house meeting.
