KARACHI - At least one and a half dozen people including five women and a minor boy were wounded in Karachi due to aerial firing during the New Year celebration.

The government of Sindh had imposed Section 144 on aerial firing and riding motorcycles without silencers, however, law enforcement agencies remained fail to control the incidents of aerial firing .

At least eight injured people were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), six to Civil Hospital, Karachi while five to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Majority of the injured people were later shifted after medical first aid treatment.

As the clock ticks 12, the entire city echoed with the gunshots and in clear violation of the orders of the Sindh government, Karachiities celebrated the start of the New Year with aerial firing and the victims of the aerial firing were brought to the hospitals from different parts of the city including Defence, Baghdadi, Garden, Jackson, Mehmoodabad, Korangi, Landhi, Nazimabad, Lyari, Rizvia Society, Gizri, Shirin Jinnah Colony in Clifton and Ibrahim Hyderi despite the heavy deployment, patrolling and snap checking by the Rangers troops and police personnel in entire city. The injured persons included Anmol, daughter of Mumtaz, Abida, 27, daughter of Shahmir, Reema, 34, daughter of Iqbal, Masooma, 18, daughter of Sajid Hussain, Shahjahan, 45, wife of Muhammad Saleem, eight-year-old Munir Kamal, Shahid Ilyas, 19, Tahir Ikram, 35, Sadaqat, 40, Fida, 45, Aftab, 26, Omar Farooq, 26, Abdul Razzak, 30, Zain, 25, Muhammad Afzal, 34, Ahsan Siddiqui, 34 and Zaheer Khan, 28.

Though the Sindh chief minister and home minister had ordered police to take strict action against those resorting to aerial firing but unfortunately, the law enforcers neither able to stop the incidents of aerial firing nor safe the citizens of being victims of the aerial firing .

Police also baton charged the youths gathered at the Five Star Chowrangi in North Nazimabad ahead to celebrate the New Year night where the youths were busy in welcoming the New Year by dancing and using firecrackers which also caused of massive traffic jam in the surroundings.

A massive traffic jam was also reported on the routes leading towards the Sea View as what the Sindh chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had ordered the police to allow the citizens to go to the Sea View on the eve of New Year.

Last arrest of the 2017, a suspect, namely Naseer was arrested by the Taimuria police. His arrest was the last arrest of the year 2017. The accused Naseer was arrested for selling the firecrackers to the citizens on the eve of the New Year. A case has been registered against him and further investigation was underway.

Similarly, Azizabad police also arrested a suspect for selling the firecrackers to the citizens on the eve of New Year. His arrest was the first arrest of the year 2018. The Azizabad police also claim to have recovered a huge cache of firecrackers from his possession.

The last murder of 2017, was occurred in the Manghopir police remits while the last the incident of firing incident in which a man was injured took place in Baloch Colony area.

An eighteen-year-old Shahid Iqbal was shot dead while he was sitting at a teashop in Mianwali Colony in Manghopir and unidentified persons riding a motorcycle shot and killed him. Police officials said that Shahid Iqbal’s murder was the last murder of the year 2017. Similarly, a person, namely Obaid was the last injure person of the year 2017, who was wounded in a firing incident in Sacchal area while a fifteen-year-old Bilal Faiz who was wounded in a firing incident in Baloch Colony area by a stray bullet was the first injured of the year 20187.

While a first FIR of New Year 2018 was registered at the Garden police station against the accused person, namely Khurram. Police officials said that the accused arrested was the street criminal. His FIR No 01/18 was registered on behalf of state at the Garden police station.
