KARACHI - A private contractor hired by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is yet to fix mandatory installations and security system devices for automated car parking system at Jinnah International Air port (JIAP) Karachi.
According to reliable sources, the parking lot has become a growing threat to commuters and parking in front of the country’s busiest airport of country.
The sources said on the condition of anonymity that no security installations were fixed following the allotment of car parking contract as per the agreement executed between the CAA and private contractor six months ago. The contractor was bound to provide multimedia, high resolution CCTV cameras, levelling lines and other security apparatus but nothing has been done on the site, they said.
The sources told The Nation that after the violation of agreement should have been resulted in the cancellation of contract and forfeit of entire recoveries in the initial bid deposit and security money, but nobody even dare talk about the matter because contractor ‘is influential personality’.
The contractor is said to have been enjoying the backing of PPP ex minister and PTI minority president.
The sources alleged the contractor greased the palm of contract-awarding authorities that declared disqualified eight of 10 applicants.
Out of the rest, just the ‘favorite’ firm won the bid, the sources said, adding that the contractor has been getting the contract for the last 20 years.
When contacted, CAA spokesman Pervez Georege was oblivious of the situation, saying: “The contract was revised as year ago.” A terrorist attack at Karachi international Airport in June 2014 claimed the lives of 28 and left scores wounded critically.
