LAHORE - A police constable was killed and another injured critically when a car smashed into a police checkpoint in the Defence area late on Sunday night.

Police sources said the fatal accident took place because of drunk driving on New Year Night.

Some policemen were standing behind the barriers placed in the middle of a busy road when a speedy car crashed into the checkpoint late Sunday night. As a result, a policeman died on the spot while the other was rushed to a hospital with multiple injuries.  The deceased was identified as Constable Mustansir Hussain. The condition of Qasim was said to be out of danger. The police arrested a man soon after the accident. The suspect was said to be a close friend of an influential person from southern Punjab. The police registered a criminal case against the car driver and launched the investigation.


City police arrested dozens of bootleggers and troublemakers during a massive crackdown on the eve of New Year, a police spokesperson said on Monday.

The arrests were made during police raids in Shera Kot, Iqbal Town, Defence, Gulberg, Shahdara and Civil Lines police precincts. The suspects were sent to the lockup after the police registered separate cases against them on different charges, including aerial firing and drunk driving.

Most of arrests were made in Civil Lines and Iqbal Town police divisions. According to police sources, at least 60 people were arrested by police as they raided a dance party in the Shera Kot police area.

The police also seized firearms and bottles of liquor from their possession.

A large number of people resorted to aerial firing across the metropolis to welcome the New Year on Sunday night. Also, the massive firing and fireworks triggered panic in many parts of the city as police were helpless to control the situation.
