LAHORE - Chief Justice Lahore High Court on Wednesday chided police top brass for permanently blocking several thoroughfares in city, observing that police have been assigned the duty of protecting people but its high ups are only protecting themselves by taking shelter in barricaded offices. It is a matter of great concern that police have multiplied peoples miseries by blocking roads in the name of security. Law of the land does not permit them to obstruct roads, CJ said. CJ went on to say that security situation has improved in the country due to armed forces sacrifices, which they are rendering to save the country. There are also reports that terrorists network might have been broken, he added. Advocate General Punjab Raza Farooq presented a report and pleaded that in-camera proceedings might be held in the case due to sensitivity involved in the matter. Responding to AGPs request CJ initially said, Read out report in an open court so that people could know about what is going on in the country. CJ, however, after going through the report accepted AGP request and decided to hold in-camera proceeding from Thursday (today). DIG Operations, SSP Operations, CCPO Lahore appeared before the court but the IGP could not turn up due to some engagement. CJ had taken suo moto notice of the situation on Wednesday after reports published in newspapers and summoned top police brass while observing: Offices of the Inspector General of Police, Capital City Police Officer and SSP (Operations) have become no-go-areas in the name of security. The news report said that all front of IGP office has been encroached beyond footpath by creating cemented blocks while road between Government College Ground and IGP office has been totally blocked for traffic. Road leading to Civil Secretariat from IGP office chowk between Planning & Development Building and Special Branch has also been closed up to Secretariat chowk. Moreover, half of the road in front of the CCPO office from Rescue 15 building to Chief Minister House has been blocked. Traffic coming from Wapda House has been diverted on The Mall Road and people have to go along Lawrence Garden, China Chowk, Board of Intermediate and then turn from Ganga Ram Hospital. The report further said that at the office of SSP Operations in front of Islamia College Civil Lines one side of the road has been completely closed including a portion in front of district courts to Government Muslim High School chowk. All these constructions of the walls on thoroughfares have created a great traffic hazards for the public at large and the people were facing great difficulties due to these uncalled for constructions, the report asserted. Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif has summoned the top police officer for July 1 (today) to explain the reasons and also take necessary measures for the removal of these obstructions in public interest. Advocate General Punjab was also directed to ensure the compliance of courts order and appear before the court to assist in the matter.
