ISLAMABAD - Top leadership of the country (troika) Wednesday reaffirmed commitment to fight in the troubled areas of north-west and tribal belt till complete elimination of the militants. The militants would be chased till they surrender or get killed, it was asserted in a high level meeting held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the issues relating to overall law and order situation in the country. Spokesman for the President, Farhatullah Babar told media that counter-insurgency operation in Malakand and South Waziristan regions, rehabilitation of displaced persons and overall security situation in the country were discussed in the meeting. The spokesman also quoted the President as saying War against terrorism would be taken to its logical end until the absolute elimination of extremists. He said enduring peace would be established in the country by completely exterminating the militants from the troubled areas, Babar further quoted President Zardari. According to him, Zardari said the government was focusing the relief and rehabilitation of affected persons from Malakand, adding the government would ensure the safe return of all the displaced persons. President Zardari further said that the reconciliation with the extremists was out of question. On the occasion, Chief of Army Staff informed the Prime Minister and the President about the ongoing operation and current situation in Malakand and Waziristan. He also apprised the President about his recent visits to France, Germany and Russia. Sources, privy to the meeting said the military and political leadership had asserted that the militants must accept the writ of government by surrendering along with their arms. It was also agreed during the meeting that war against terrorists would continue until the absolute elimination of militants, the sources added. The meeting showed satisfaction on the ongoing military action in different parts of the NWFP and tribal areas and commended the role of the armed forces. On this occasion, rich tributes were paid to the jawans and officers who had laid down their lives in the war against terrorism. Earlier, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also called on the Prime Minister separately at the PM House and briefed him on the matters relating to national security. Expressing satisfaction over the ongoing military operation in Malakand and South Waziristan areas against militants, Prime Minister Gilani said that Pakistan Army and security forces were taking the operation Rah-e-Rast to its logical end and it would continue till the elimination of terrorists. The Prime Minister paid glowing tributes to the Armed Forces and security agencies who had sacrificed a lot in weeding out the menace of terrorism. The nation is proud of its armed forces particularly those who have laid their lives for the national cause, the Prime Minister said. The sources in the Prime Minister Secretariat informed TheNation that the meeting also discussed the ongoing military operation in Waziristan and the process of IDPs repatriation after the successful purging of militants from the Swat valley and Malakand division. The Prime Minister during the meeting categorically stated that the government would not allow any one to challenge the writ of the government and asked terrorists to lay down arms, adding there would be no compromise on national security, sources told. The sources further said that the COAS during the meeting informed the Prime Minister that the Operation Rah-e-Rast was in last stage and would be completed soon. More than 1700 terrorists were killed in the operation while over 80, including foreigners, were arrested, they added. The sources also said that General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said that the security forces were securing the areas to ensure safe return of the IDPs.
