LAHORE - The Punjab government has decided to install water treatment plants on drains including Hadayara Drain to control pollution in the River Ravi.
Water treatment plants will be installed on drains in phases before discharge into the River Ravi so that the riverine ecology could be protected. Decision was taken at a meeting held at Environment Protection Department head office on Monday with Environment Minister Col Shuja Khanzada in the chair. Environment Secretary Anwar Rasheed and EPA Director General Farooq Hameed Sheikh were also present. Anwar Rasheed briefed the participants about the situation of Hadayara Drain. The minister said that water treatment plant would be installed on Hadayara Drain in the first phase. He said the action would be taken against polluting industries. He said a meeting of all the stakeholders would be convened soon to devise a strategy to improve environment. Terms of Reference have been sent to all the relevant institutions, he said. He said a strategy would be designed after discussion with all the institutions and NGOs.
Every institution would be bound to follow this strategy and would present implementation report to the EPD after every six months, he added.
