HAFIZABAD-The encroachments in the city have not only reappeared but multiplied in the aftermath of the general elections, causing a lot of hardships and inconvenience to the general public. According to survey conducted by The Nation, Fawara Chowk, Vanike Chowk, congested Main Bazaar, Post Office Road, Gujranwala Road, Raja Chowk, Qatal Garha Chowk, near General Bus Stand and Railway Gate have been virtually occupied by push-cart vendors, rickshawalas and at some places fruit vendors who have been causing traffic hazards on almost all city thoroughfares. The traffic mess created by the encroachers has been causing multiple problems for the pedestrians not to speak of motorists. Most of the permanent encroachments are the result of patronage of the traffic police and some of the employees of Tehsil Municipal Administration and some cronies of elected representatives with the encroachers. Besides, presence of two grain markets in the heart of the city was also creating traffic hazards. Although shifting of these grain markets out of the city had been decided about 12 years ago and land for the proposed new grain market had been acquired on Madhrianwala Road about 10 years back yet the shifting of these grain markets have been lingering on due to one pretext or the other. Local Citizens Associations and President Awami Mahaz Rana Khalid Mahmood have called upon the DPO and DCO to order removal of encroachments from the city roads particularly from congested and busy chowks and roads for ensuring smooth flow of traffic in the city. LHW HARASSED: Another Lady Health Worker performing her duties to administer anti-polio vaccine to kids in Qila Balwant Singh was insulted, abused and harassed by a fiendish young man Imran Baqir. According to LHW Khalida Arshid, the accused not only insulted her but also hurled threat of dire consequences. On her report, the Kassoke Police have arrested the accused and registered a case against him accordingly. SWOOP ON WATER THIEVES: Shahid Abbas General Assistant Revenue has directed the SDO Irrigation to take stern action against the habitual water thieves and ensure provision of irrigational water at the tail-end of all the water courses and distributaries so that the cultivators located at the tail-end could also irrigate their land. During his surprise visit he found that habitual thieves have been getting irrigational water from the water courses by cutting the bank near Saroopwala, Shah Jamal, Beemianwala, Thatha Noor Shah, Peer Kamal and Thatha Gahra and has directed the SDO Irrigation to get criminal cases registered against the water thieves of these villages. OBITUARY: Muhammad Ramzan, uncle of Muhammad Yaqoob Shahzad, Vice Chairman Press Club Hafizabad died here after protracted illness Monday morning.
