Lowest-ever level of water in Pakistan’s dams

The issue of water scarcity continues in the country at an alarming rate as the combined water storage in the dams hits the lowest level in the history.

The officials of the Indus River System Authority have told that the lack of rains in 2018 is a major reason for the severe water shortage.

The capacity of the two largest dams of the country, Tarbela and Mangla is 900,000 acre-feet, they both currently hold only 128,000 acre feet and 718,000 acre-feet water respectively.

Moreover, another important barrage of the country, the Chashma Barrage has a water capacity of only 44,000 acre feet.

With a severe water crisis looming overhead, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has also addressed the issue by calling a meeting of experts to discuss the construction of two dams.
