KARACHI Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir has strongly condemned the Israeli aggression against the Gaza-bound aid convoy Freedom Flotilla, and said that Israel violation is a threat to the international peace. The continuous expansion in the Indian Navy is the matter of concern for us, while Pakistan Navy (PN) is taking all possible steps to make the naval force able to face all emerging challenges. Pakistan Navy has peaceful naval diplomacy. We have suggested for setting up of a coordination cell among Maritime institutions to stop Mumbai-style incidents in the country, he said while delivering a lecture on The Navys Role in Peacetime Diplomacy: Emergency Scenario in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, organised by Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) at its library. The Naval Chief said the maritime institutions, including Pakistan Navy, Coast Guard, Maritime Security Agency, were not so coordinated as they should be, hence Pakistan Navy had underlined the importance of a coordination cell to make these institutions much closer. He said, We need to devise a strategy to meet challenges emerging from the Indian boarder, where India is quite busy to get bigger its naval force that is threat for us. Pakistan Navy is capable of facing every kind of challenges either related to peacetime or war. Pakistan is a peace loving country that believes in promotion of peace and stability, for which freedom of navigation on high seas and uninterrupted flow of trade is an essential requirement. PN is a balanced force, capable of undertaking combat, constabulary and benign operations in our area of interest. The PN fleet is supported by an effective command, control, communications, logistics and training infrastructure. Around 97 percent of Pakistans trade is transported through the sea, freedom of navigation on high seas is sine qua non for our national progress. Being custodian of the countrys maritime interests, Pakistan Navy (PN) will continue to play its due role for safeguarding these interests. We need to work together with our friends and coalition partners to ensure freedom of seas. The PN will remain committed, in accordance with national policies, to play its due role in the maritime domain and will continue to contribute significantly to regional maritime security. To a query, he accepted the Indian Ocean had become the place for international power politics, and said that every country in the world has interest in this region. He said Pakistan was the key player in this region, while it is our prime responsibility to keep the costal area peaceful. Pakistan Navy was not only providing protection to its citizens from external threat but also dealing with drug smugglers, human smugglers and pirates. Talking about the cyclone approaching towards Pakistani coastal areas, he said the cyclone was far away from the country while the navy was monitoring it. He said the cyclone may be converted into tropical storm.
