LAHORE- Amid huge rush of swimmers in the Lahore Canal during sizzling summer, dozens of policemen are deployed on both sides of the road to maintain smooth flow of traffic and to avoid road mishaps.

Police officials said on Saturday the initiative was taken in a meeting presided over by Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Sohail Chaudhry to accommodate influx of swimmers in the canal. The traffic police are also directed to ensure parking at specific spots to maintain the vehicular flow on the main artery.

“On the orders of the chief traffic officer, one officer of SP rank, four inspectors, and 45 traffic wardens are deployed on both sides of the canal road to control the traffic and the swimmers as well,” a police spokesperson said.

The traffic police have observed that the rush of picnic-goers reaches to its climax during the weekend, which results into road mishaps or traffic jumbles on the leading artery.

“We are expecting huge rush this time since the schools are closed for summer vacations and more and more families would move to the canal to beat the heat amid hours-long load shedding,” SSP Sohail Chaudhry said.

He also directed the traffic wardens to immediately help the families in case of any untoward happening. The Lahore traffic police chief has appealed to the motorists to cooperate with the traffic police and not to park their vehicles on the road to avoid traffic mess.
