THE decisive, heavy mandate given to Mr Justice (Retd) M. A. Shahid Siddiqui, who was elected (2676 votes, to 271 shared by his two opponents) as President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association on Saturday, is heartening news for those espousing the cause of restoration of the deposed judiciary. He was a candidate of the Professional Group led by Mr Hamid Khan, former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and an ardent supporter of restoration. The PML(N) candidate, Munawar Iqbal Gondal, backed by the same group, was also home as Vice President. The lawyers movement also finds renewed strength with the clear-cut support now extended by the PML(N) and the strong feelings prevalent among civil society that the rule of law constitutes a fundamental element in curing a large number of ills that afflict our polity. It is hoped that the vote would make the authorities reflect on the consequences of their inaction and settle the issue before the long march begins.
