Zardari seeking remedy to undo disqualification

Islamabad - President Asif Ali Zardari spent a busy day on Sunday weighing various options to seek a remedy to Sharif brothers' disqualification issue through an act of Parliament. Well-placed sources told TheNation that the PPP Co-Chairman held consultations with the party's inner circles to find out a course to resolve the stand off with Sharif Brothers. Sources privy to these developments said that President Zardari was inclined to engage the coalition partners, particularly the ANP and JUI (F) to mediate between the PPP and PML-N in resolving the political crises. It was learnt that coalition leaders including Asfandyar Wali Khan and Maulana Fazlur Rehman were expected to meet the President today to discuss various options in effort to resolve the crises. Both the leaders met here on Sunday and discussed the political situation and strategy to help resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar dismissed media reports that both the leaders (Asfandyar Wali and Maulana Fazlur Rehman) had met the President on Sunday, adding he was unaware of any person tasked by the President to initiate talks with Sharif Brothjers. "There is no contact between the PPP and the PML-N since SC judgment and subsequent Governor Rule in the Punjab", Farhatullah Babar told TheNation. He however made it clear that PPP was open to talks for reconciliation in the interest of peace and stability in the country. Babar categorically rejected that the President and the Prime Minister had tasked Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani to mediate between the PPP and PML-N to resolve the stalemate. The PML-N Chairman and senator-elect Raja Zafarul Haq has also denied any contact between the two major political parties till to-date. The PML-N sources were sceptical about PPP Co-Chairman going extra mile in remedying the situation, rather most of them were of the view that Asif Ali Zardari was actually trying to buy time for his cronies in the Punjab to woo support of MPAs needed to form PPP-led government in Punjab. "The Governor Punjab Salman Taseer and other PPP leaders in the province are conspiring to convert the PML-N majority in the Punjab Assembly into minority through undemocratic means", PML-N Central Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said. He said that purpose of proclaiming governor rule in the Punjab province was to buy the loyalties of MPAs. He was of the view that Asif Zardari would not lift Governor Rule from the province until achieving the desired goal. "It is premature to comment about timeline regarding convening of the Punjab Assembly session or about lifting of the Governor Rule", PPP spokesperson MNA Farahnaz Isphani observed. She said PPP wants normalcy to return to the province as early as possible for the sake of peace and stability in the country. In a related development, ANP MNA and former federal minister Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti who met PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif in Raiwind on Sunday told TheNation he was upbeat about possible course through the Parliament to resolve the political crises.
