Power tariffs likely to surge

Power tariffs are expected to surge once again by Rs. 1.77 per unit on request by Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The power tariffs will be raised for the month of September, media reported on Wednesday. According to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), tariffs of power distributing companies will be revved up under monthly fuel adjustment, as electricity to the tune of 8.11 billion units, was sold out to these companies during September. The fuel cost on the sold out electricity was Rs. 46.04 billion. NEPRA will finally approve the tariffs hike tomorrow with no application from Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC). The power distribution companies will receive from their consumers a revenue worth Rs. 14.19 billion if the NEPRA grants the proposed raise in power tariffs tomorrow. The proposed hike will be applicable to all consumers save those using 50 units or less.
