LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Thursday issued notice to the National Accountability Bureau on a bail petition moved by former Punjab University vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran in an illegal appointments case.

A division bench headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najfi issued the order.  The petitioner’s counsel said that Dr Kamran had been on judicial remand after completion of investigation in the case.

He said he had never been involved in illegal appointments. He asked the court for release of his client on bail. After hearing the arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, the bench issued notice to the NAB and adjourned the hearing until Nov 07.

In a separate case to bar the federal government from taking foreign loans, the LHC once again issued notices to the respondents. Justice Shahid Karim was hearing the case moved by Advocate Azhar Siddique. The petitioner had said that the volume of the foreign loans had reached to 80 per cent GDP of the state and the former finance minster concealed this fact from the nation. He had asked the court to restrain the federal government from taking further foreign loans. Petition against POL prices: A  petition was moved to the Lahore High Court on Thursday challenging recent increase in the prices of the petroleum products.

Advocate Azhar Siddique of Judicial Activism Panel filed the petition, stating that no increase was witnessed in the POL prices in the international market but despite that the government increased the prices by burdening the common man.  He made OGRA and the federal government as respondents in the case.

The petitioner said the government increased the prices only to collect the sales tax. The new rate would lead to more inflation in the country, creating troubles for the common man, he said. He also said over 17 per cent increase in POL prices was against the law. He asked the court to order the government authorities to announce decrease in the prices of the petroleum products.
