Why would anyone testify, indeed swear, having sighted the moon if he has not actually seen it? Is a government-nominated mullah the know-all expert on religion or we can also solicit other opinion? This is not a matter of politics but I for one cannot understand why Mufti Sahib is so reluctant to accept any testimony of moon sighting from the NWFP? The central Ruet-e-Hilal is not even ready to listen to the witnesses from NWFP. That I think is not right. Mufti Sahib is duty-bound to examine the witnesses from any part of the country even if he considers them lesser Muslims than himself and even if he is Mufti-e-Azam of Pakistan. -ZAHIR KHAN, Peshawar, September 30.
