PM orders removal of anti-labour clauses

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani gave orders for immediate steps to withdraw the notorious 'Removal from Service Ordinance 2000 and Section 27-B from the Banking Companies Ordinance as the government was committed to removal of anti-worker legislation. Addressing a Workers Convention here on Thursday, organised by the Ministry of Labour and Manpower, Premier Gilani handed over stocks of PPL to the workers, formally launching the Benazir Employees Stock Option Scheme (BESOS) to create a sense of ownership and empowerment among the workers. Under the scheme 12 per cent GoP share holding worth some Rs. 100 billion would be transferred to half a million workers of the state-owned enterprises. Gilani said the scheme would enhance growth and ensure protection and security of the assets as the workers would have direct stakes in the entities in which they were also the shareholders. The Workers Convention 2009 was attended by hundreds of workers, trade union representatives and labour leaders from all over the country. The Prime Minister said he was glad to have fulfilled yet another dream of Shaheed Ms Benazir Bhutto as the PPP strongly believed in the principles of democracy. We believe that people are the real source of power, as they have a birth right to determine their own fate, Gilani said and vowed to do all to empower them. He said the Benazir Employees Stock Option Scheme was aimed at increasing productivity, and to enhanced gross national product to bring about economic prosperity. He said the government in the past 19 months had taken a number of steps to bridge the gulf between rich and the poor and support the underprivileged sections of the society, so that they too may lead a happy and prosperous life. Gilani said it was the Shaheed Chairman of the Party Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who gave the slogan of 'roti, kapra aur makan and the present leadership of the party was carrying on with this vision and would fulfil all the promises made to them. Gilani said Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto also carried forward the legacy of her father and even sacrificed her life for this cause. We will do all within our means to honour the promises she made to this nation, the prime minister said. Gilani vowed to end oppression and exploitation from the society and provide a system where justice and equality prevails, where every citizen gets equal opportunity to all basic facilities of health, education and to progress in life. Gilani greeted all those who were handed over the stock certificates and expressed the hope that they will continue to deliver with hard work, honesty and sincerity. Minister for Information Kamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for labour Syed Khurshid Shah and Minister for Petroleum and Privatisation Naveed Qamar also spoke on the occasion.
