The card game

Now that Musharraf is finally gone, the matter of Chief Justice's restoration is shelved. It's like a game of cards is being played in Islamabad; they just dealt cards for the second game. The country, meanwhile, is mired in innumerable problems. Ministries are inadequately manned; masses are moaning about price hike, shortages are rampant, availability scarce. Dark forebodings about the future are looming over the country. Why is the reinstatement of judges such a big a problem when the removal could be done through a simple, one-page executive order, and that too by an autocrat of dubious legitimacy? It all seems to be a big joke. About time they started doing something for the common man. If Musharraf, with full support of army behind him, had to go because of public wrath against him, the present government should also count its days in power. They need to do something for people before people do something about them. -AMJAD HABIB MIRZA, Lahore, via e-mail, August 20.
