PESHAWAR - At least 40 militants have been killed and several others injured during military action in different areas of Bara, Khyber Agency, officials said on Tuesday. As per details, the security forces launched the operation in the wee hours and targeted hideouts and compounds of alleged militants with artillery and gunship helicopters. The officials of Frontier Corps terming the military action successful said that around 40 militants had been killed and several injured. The officials also claimed to have arrested more than 40 militants and destroyed four their hideouts. Meanwhile, Political Agent of Khyber Agency while briefing the media informed that five militants, including three commanders identified as Abdul Rahman, Murad and Hayat, had been killed. He said that 12 militants had been injured while 38 arrested in the action. He also said that curfew had been imposed all over the area. Agencies add: The 40 militants were in a new offensive in Tehsil Bara of rugged Khyber region, a crucial thoroughfare for US military supplies heading for Afghanistan, officials said. The security forces effectively engaged militant positions at Kohi and Saifur Markaz and inflicted heavy losses on them during operation Daraglam in Bara. During heavy exchange of firing 40 militants were killed and 43 others apprehended, officials said. The Khybers top government officer told a news conference in Peshawar that troops fired artillery at militants. Residents said helicopter gunships flew several sorties but did not open fire. Forty militants were killed and 43 arrested during the operation, Peshawar official Tariq Hayat Khan said. It will continue till we achieve our objective and restore writ of government. The operation in Khyber came after last Thursdays suicide attack on police barracks near the Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which had killed 22 policemen.
