Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has shifted from Block B to Block Y of the DHA, Lahore. I learnt about this when I came out of my house in Block X on 24th of March to find the entire area packed with police and traffic wardens. They were deployed in pairs in every street on both ends and every 50 yards on the roads, one facing inwards, the other facing outwards with rifles on the ready. There were mobile police vans and helmeted traffic riders. There were even policemen on some rooftops. I think at least 2000 policemen were deployed here to provide security to the favourite VVIP of the Lahore DHA area. With the DHA under siege of police for the sake of just one VVIP, one got the impression that a police encounter with some terrorist group was on the anvil. I wish they had employed one fifth of this force to protect the Sri Lankan cricket team on 3rd of March and we would still be having cricket here. This massive security arrangement lasted for the full two days the PM was here for PPP's party convention. I fail to understand why he could not use a helicopter to go to and fro? In any case, our VVIPs should live with their families in official residences only at Islamabad. Their private residences in other cities could be guarded by a small posse of policemen and no more. -MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, March 27.
