LAHORE - Activists of Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) hijacked two PU buses, one each from Old and New Campuses, snatched a mobile and while threatening the drivers and conductors forced them to transport expelled students and external elements to the VC Office for a demonstration, said a spokesman of the varsity on Thursday. The spokesman said to protest over the incident, more then 150 staff members of the Transport Wing went on strike and parked the buses within the premises of the workshop at New Campus. However, after the assurances from the administration, they called off their 3 hours long sit-in at workshop. He said Resident Officer-I Prof Shahid Gul, Controller Examinations Prof Zahid Karim Khan and other officials reached the spot and assured the transport staff of full cooperation by the administration. The drivers and conductors have demanded to take strict action against the IJT activists involved in the serious incident, he added. Speaking on the occasion, one of the drivers Shabbir and his colleague conductor Shahid Shabbir said as the students left the bus after they reached the Old Campus, some IJT activists including Hafiz Tauseef, Munir Tahir, Abdul Hafeez Tahir and others (all expelled from the university due to involvement in various cases) hijacked the bus, tortured them, snatched the mobile of the conductor and forced them to drive the bus towards the New Campus so that they could participate in the protest against so-called increase in fees. Another driver Muhammad Akbar and conductor Shaukat narrated the same story and said they were near the New Campus, when the IJT activists held them forcibly threatening of dire consequence and compelled them to take the bus to the varsity campus. All the employees and representatives of the Punjab University have condemned the incident and expressed their sympathy with the victims. It is noteworthy that PU has over 60 buses, and over 150 staffers in the transport wing including 60 each drivers and conductors. On the other hand, spokesman of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) claimed that a large number of students and activists of the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami staged a protest demonstration outside Hailey College of Commerce at the New Campus of PU against increasing fee and lack of education facilities in the varsity. The students, carrying posters and banners, chanted slogans against the management. They blocked the Canal Road thus jamming the traffic and motorists had to face difficulties to approach their destinations. Increased fee and expulsion of students were the issues inscribed on the banners and placards of the participants. The charged activists moved towards the vice chancellors office, the students of the Law College and departments like Chemical, IER, CHEP, Geology and others joined the rally. As the students reached VC office, various officials of PU including Registrar Dr Naeem, Resident officer Dr Bashir and the principal Hailey College of Commerce addressed the students but they failed to satisfy them.
