KARACHI - Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Sharmila Farooqui on Friday hailed the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms for approving the draft of 18th Amendment after reaching consensus with all major political parties of the country. In a statement issued here, she said that this historic agreement would turn the 1973 Constitution in real shape, bolster the rule of law, strengthen democracy and bring a new era of social, political and economic development in the country. She said that it was a tribute to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who sacrificed her life for restoration of democracy and supremacy of the Constitution. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had provided a consensus Constitution to the country in 1973 which was widely hailed by all political parties but dictatorial regimes of Gen Zia and Musharraf amended it as per their will in a bid to get their nefarious designs of prolonging rules. But this time President Asif Ali Zardari has done a good job by getting consensus from all major political parties through his reconciliation policy and credit of this landmark achievement goes to him, she added. She said that new bill on constitutional reforms would hopefully be approved by the National Assembly and the Senate for the good of the people, democracy and development of the country. In 1985 dictator, General Zia amended over 90 Articles of the Constitution while another dictator Pervez Musharraf changed its 26 Articles. The consensus on constitutional reforms is the outcome of sincere efforts made by President Asif Ali Zardari who had directed National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza to form a committee to bring reforms in the Constitution and she did well. Mian Raza Rabbani also played a good role in reaching consensus. History was made on Wednesday when Parliamentary Committee inked the draft of the 18th Amendment to eradicate the dictatorial amendments from the Constitution, she said. Sharmila said that the political parties would do more work to form positive policies in the country which would make the people and the country prosperous. The PPP government was determined to restore 1973 Constitution in its real shape through the support from the political, religious and social parties so as to fulfil the mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He is also making efforts to strengthen federation and boost provincial autonomy through its reconciliation policy initiated by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and being carried forward by President Asif Ali Zardari. The passage of bill from the National Assembly and the Senate will also help to rid the country of socio-economic problems, end scourge of terrorism, restore durable peace and flourish strong democracy in the country, she concluded.
