MIRANSHAH  – Despite increasing risk of polio disease in tribal region bordering Afghanistan, tribesmen of some areas in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) have refused to allow medical teams administer polio drops to their children.

Secretary Administration and Coordination Fata, Abid Majeed on Monday told media that people of some areas in NWA, considered by the US as hub of militancy, had refused to administer polio drops to their children.  Abid said political administration had decided to take help of the local Ulema and Muftis in this regard as people with religious inclination were hesitant to get their kids vaccinated.

Abid said six polio cases were reported from the tribal region of which five were reported in Khyber Agency and one in NWA. It merits mentioning here that the latest report forwarded by the health organisation states that children of far flung areas of the tribal region were not given polio drops during the last few years as the far flung areas were declared no go areas for the polio teams for security reasons.
